[ and that -- that was honest. for the longest time mako had privately freaked out over the potential that he wouldn't be attracted to her anymore; pregnancy hormones, you know. And it never really went away after childbirth, because having a baby is traumatic and up until the first time he came to her again for sex, she'd been worried. Had kept it under wraps, of course, but sometimes it turns up now and then.
Like now. ]
I was afraid you wouldn't look at me that way again.
[ things like this are always better to admit over text. ]
[ noooo intense emotional text conversations are never healthy. especially because raleigh misses the tone of seriousness and can't take this seriously because — ]
What?
[ — really? if he ever stops being attracted to mako mori, check him for a pulse. ]
[ no, she wasn't, and there was a little bit of the post-natal depression going on there for awhile, but she'd sought help for it because it's not something she wants to burden raleigh with. ]
[ and he knew something was a-miss. but hadn't pried and let her come to terms with it herself because she could do things by herself and didn't always need him. everything had been fine in the end. or so he'd thought, because apparently he has some work to do.
You say that like I'm going to wander off or run away.
[ She's okay now, she really is -- and she regrets blurting it out to him because this isn't something he needs to work on. It just... is what it is, you know? ]
[ no, their's is a partnership. and while they do not need to carry each other's burdens entirely, it does them good to check in and make sure everything is working alright. ]
[ And Mama's coming home! It's a long, but good day at work, and Mako's tired, with shoulders sore and she's just looking forward to an evening with her family.
Putting her shoes neatly on the shoe rack, she sets aside her bag and drops the keys in the bowl on the counter. ]
for a tiny little naked boy to come running around the corner, still dripping from his bath and being chased by his father toting the penguin colored bathtowel with a hood. he's half herding the baby towards mako, half actually trying to dry him off, but there's a few delighted shrieks, and yancy trips and continues his mad dash for his mother on his hands and knees.
raleigh eventually gives up the chase and just follows up so he can kiss his partner on the lips while she has an armful of baby. ]
[ Yeah, this? This is perfect, this is amazing and wonderful and Mako scoops her tiny little naked crawling baby and he's laughing and she's grinning and oh, oh look at Daddy coming for a kiss.
She's kissing him back and laughing while Yancy squirms happily in her arms. ] I imagine the bathroom's a warzone.
No one got out alive, [ raleigh tells her dramatically, though by alive he means dry. he's got a sweater on, rolled up to the elbows and utterly soaked because yancy loves to splash, he thinks it's funny. ]
You're getting Mama wet, kiddo, [ he announces, and sort of scoops yancy out of mako's arms just long enough to wrap him in a towl and dump him back at her. ]
[ This is what it's all about, the warmth of home and family and love, and she's cuddling up to their now dry baby with a wet patch on her silk blouse but Mako really, really doesn't care right now because Yancy's giving her sloppy kisses and she's not about to resist.
And Raleigh, Raleigh's a hot, sexy, wet mess and she's reaching out to ruffle Raleigh's hair, too. ]
Daddy's gonna live, he was sort of asking for it with the rubber duckies.
[ raleigh is resigned to his fate and loves his life. he's grinning, even when she ruffles his hair like a dog (it's how mako mori shows affection, and it isn't nearly as demeaning as he'd once thought), and brushes the penguin bill of the colorful bath towel over yancy's face, which makes the child squeal with delight. ]
[ The mental image makes her smile widen, because she can imagine the chaos once the rubber duckies were introduced. Yancy's making grabs for the towel now, squealing and laughing, and Mako shakes her head. It's moments like these she loves, the delightfully mundane, the sweetly domestic, and she bounces her little boy, kissing his cheek once the towel's done its job. ]
I'll get him dressed; he's done enough damage to you for the day.
[ And besides, it lets Raleigh have some time for himself and allows Mako to spend time with Yancy. She heads into Yancy's nursery, and it's easy enough to get him dressed and settled in to nurse. She shifts her blouse, heavy and bloated and ready for her son, and soon enough, he's latched onto her breast, contentedly suckling. ]
[ raleigh is a-okay with this division of labor. he also has to make dinner (order pizza) and there was a load of sopping wet laundry that has yet to get into the dryer, so he's going to let mako nurse while he orders their half-cheese half-pepperoni usual and puts their towels in on the "cotton - high" setting.
he lounges in the kitchen for a little bit before deciding she's probably had plenty of time to get yancy dressed, especially considering he doesn't hear the shrieking of a temper tantrum upstairs. so raleigh fishes out two beers from the fridge and trumps upstairs to offer her one, but when he walks into the nursery and sees her nursing he realizes he should probably back up. or, like, regroup here. ]
Eh, I suppose I can drink both.
[ while sitting cross legged between yancy's blocks and stuffed dog, and smiling at the two of them. look at these fucking cuties. ]
[ Mako laughs -- good call, babe; she'd have to refuse the beers anyway. Mako stays the hell away from even coffee when she's nursing, because the last time she had coffee and breastfed Yancy, the boy was bouncing off the walls the entire night.
But Mako's looking forward to the pizza; she's hungry and right now she can eat her bodyweight in food, and she's pleased that Raleigh's here too, at least he can make things less boring. Look at the adorable way Raleigh's grinning at them. She beams at him, amused. ]
How did it taste? I always thought it looked... dubiously orange.
[ yeah, okay, he'd eaten his fair spoonful or two of gerber carrots today, but rude, mako. raleigh is not a baby and is not the one who tasted and spit orange baby food all over his bib today — which almost counted as eating, right? ]
It tastes... like very orange carrots. But it's not bad. We get stuck in a snow storm, I bet even you'd like it.
[ shhh, she was just teasing you. It's a big thing, though, that their baby is slowly graduating towards eating semi-solid foods. Adjusting him, Mako smiles, all proud mama.
Raleigh's done an incredible job with raising him, and he needs to know that. ]
