Mmmmmmmmmmm, [ baby yancy can be heard enthusiastically emitting. babies learn their vowels first, consonants second; but yancy seems to have moved on from aaaaaa's and ooooo's, and latched firmly onto dadadadada and mmmmm after raleigh's extensive coaching. ]

[ in the background, raleigh can be heard chuckling, and stage whispering: ] Ask her what's for dinner?
[ and then yancy's off! throwing consonants and vowels together in very haphazard "words" for mako to enjoy at the other end of the line; look, mom, i'm talking! ]
[ no, mako, the kid was clearly trying to say turkey tetrazzini, but raleigh let's that slide. it's the hours on end that he spends with little yancy that's made him as fluent in baby talk as he is; mako works, and has to deal with actual humans, where as the most raleigh ever has to deal with are nosy moms at mommy-and-me class, and they at least revere him from a distance.
yancy's got the phone in his own hand, holding it to his head in a very good imitation of what he's seen mako do, and raleigh's smiling and poking his son in the stomach a couple times over again. yancy seems torn between giggling and chattering, lighting up at the word mama and wiggling excitedly as he stares at his dad, who wiggles excitedly in return.
he lets that continue for thirty seconds before reaching out his hand and asking: ] Can Daddy talk to Mommy, too?
[ Ugh, Mako and her two precious, precious babies. It's moments like these where she's flush with so much love for the both of them, for the man she's committed to spending her whole life with, and for the young life they'd created together.
She's enjoying Yancy's nonsense, and when Yancy gurgles and hands the phone back to his dad after a few seconds before crawling onto Raleigh's lap and giving him sloppy kisses, Mako says: ]
[ "crawling into raleigh's lap" is more like yancy trying to haul his way up on his dad's knees and failing because he's only just mastered crawling horizontally; add in some slope, and the kid's a goner. ]
Well, he was telling you we're having tetrazzini tonight, and that you should stop and get more diapers, and also butt paste because he's getting a little rash again — isn't that right, big guy!
[ yancy has no idea what raleigh just said, but he sees his dad smiling at him and smiles back excitedly. ]
[ There's something wonderfully, amazingly domestic about this and the way she's looking forward to the tetrazzini. Raleigh's improved a lot as a cook, and Mako's laughing quietly. ]
That's not called butt paste, you know. [ Then, ] I'll pick some up on my way home. What are you both up to, today?
[ but yes, good. they already went to the store and he doesn't want to wrangle their son back into his baby carrier. ]
Oh, nothing much. We're climbing some mountains — [ because yancy finally scaled his legs. ] — and we went for a walk, and we had so yogurt, and we tried climbing the stairs again, which Dad said was a no-no, right Yance?
You'll look distinguished with them, you know. And you'll still be just as handsome.
[ Mako gently teases; and yeah, she might be at work, but she loves knowing what they were up to -- and it makes her feel sad that she can't be there with them. Raleigh's a fantastic father, hiccups aside, and she settles to listen to Yancy giggle and laugh and shriek out random babbling words just because he could. ]
Was he a brave little soldier when he climbed up the stairs, then?
Fuck, [ raleigh intones without really thinking about it. luckily, yancy doesn't really pick it up, just babbles a few syllables at his father before swearing again himself.

[ he and yancy are going to have a talk about bad words, and then he's gonna brainwash it out of their kid with a lot of elmo's world. ]
[ So when Mako comes home in the evening, it's more Elmo's world and she's tired and she's mulling over the fact that their son's first word is 'shit'.
Coming back into the kitchen, she comes up behind Raleigh and gives him a brief hug. It's not his fault, and she's not about to scream at him for it. ]
...Tendo's going to laugh when he finds out what our son's first word was.
[ it's kind of his fault. he put $10 in the swear jar, but now yancy's calm and collected and watching television — completely zoned out, and just in raleigh's line of view if he leans over the counter a little bit from where he's preparing their dinner.
he's got turkey hands, but carefully turns to loop his arm around her shoulders, and pull mako in for a brief head kiss without touching her hair or clothes. ]
[ Mako smiles at that, because yeah she's had enough time to ease from completely mortified to sort-of...accepting. And she likes when Raleigh says hello to her after a long day's work.
She makes a soft noise, then asks. ] Want me to help with anything?
[ oh, she could do that. Mako takes the orajel and kisses him on the cheek, deciding to leave him to his cooking; Raleigh does best when no one disturbs him, she realises. ]
[ only usually. not always. most of the time he loves her company, but everyone needs a little 10 minute reprieve where he doesn't have to watch the baby nestled in pillows and the knife in his hand at the same time. raleigh's going to pop the tetrazzini into the over, get a beer or a soda or something, and chillax for a few minutes while mako and yancy get their bonding time. ]
He's been fine. Just fussy, and a little feverish, but that's normal.
[ She doesn't thank him nearly enough for this, because it must be tough being a stay-at-home husband; he gets ogled by the masses of mothers, has to deal with their kid, and clean the house with barely a break for himself. Mako's tired, but she loves him more than her own good. ]
How about this? I'll look after him for the night. I'll clean up after dinner, too. You go and do what you want to do.
[ that's a super sweet offer, and raleigh blinks at her for a short second before smiling. but then he shakes his head. ]
I'll just fall asleep early. And I wanted to hang out with you.
[ eventually raleigh will make friends. but right now he's still had far too much human exposure for a good long while. it doesn't help that everyone knows their names and faces, either. though baby yancy has managed to stay out of the papers thus far. ]
[ it's fortunate that baby yancy's stayed out of the papers so far, after the binky throwing incident at the park. But still, Mako sometimes worries about Raleigh -- cooping himself inside the house with their baby isn't going to be very healthy for him, right? ]
I'll open a bottle of wine? Maybe I'll send Yancy to sleep extra early today.
[ not in the long run, no. but for now, he's perfectly happy if not just a little bit tired. it gets boring sometimes. he might have the faintest case of house wife fatigue, but yancy smiles a lot, and when he smiles, he has mako's dimples, and it's all a huge reward in the end, right?
he offers her a nod, and a casual — ] Alright, [ in regards to the wine and the early bedtime for the little tot, but they all have to have dinner before bed so then he turns back to the turkey and noodles, and starts to pile it all into a casserole dish. ]
[ and mako does her motherly duties! tending to their little boy and feeding him some milk before dinner, since Yancy can't eat much of the adult food yet.
When dinner is ready, though, Mako's managed to wrangle him onto his high chair with minimal fuss, and is currently playing peek-a-boo with him after setting the table. ]
[ aaaand there's tetrazzini! smoking hot and accompanied by a salad for the adults, and a bowl of apple sauce for yancy. his high chair goes between them, so raleigh can busy himself blowing on a plate of chopped up tetrazzini to cool it off for yancy while mako plays peek-a-boo with their son.
ah, dinner time. easily the best time of the day if yancy doesn't have a sleepy meltdown. ]
